How are eyelash extensions different from fake eyelashes?

Do the two differ considerably in price? What are their main advantages?

Fake eyelashes are available on a strip and applied on the skin of the eyelid by some sort of adhesive material. Eyelash extensions are, on the whole, more naturally looking and feel softer. They are individually applied on top of your natural eyelashes, to extend the length. Fake eyelashes are heavy and can cause damage to your natural eyelashes. They are cheap, though, and can be applied independently. They also usually stay on for a week, maximum. Eyelash extensions should be applied by a professional. They are designed to be the same weight as natural eyelashes (pretty much weightless), and can last for a couple of months. They fall out when the natural eyelash each extension is resting on falls out.
